Yes, the travel protection applies to employees who are sent abroad from Finland. If the length of the so-called official journey is over 3 months, the employee is also entitled to health care at the destination country.

Will the insurance cover any dental care costs during my trip?
Dental care costs are only reimbursed in connection with accidents. An accident always involves some surprising, external factor. If e.g. you break your tooth due to the presence of a pit in your food, it is an accident and the dental care is covered. However, if your tooth hurts due to an acute dental condition, this is not reimbursed under the travel protection scheme. On official trips that last for longer than 3 months, the scheme covers any dental care that is necessary for the treatment of other illnesses.

Is influenza vaccination covered?
Government officials can get an influenza vaccine in the country they are posted in order to maintain work ability.
The influenza vaccination will be compensated for their family members too if the family member would also receive the vaccine free of charge in Finland. You can find a list of who can get the influenza vaccine on the website of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL).
In Finland, family members are primarily vaccinated through public healthcare services. -
My glasses fell into the river while we were on a prearranged canoe trip. Can I claim compensation for them?
Glasses and other personal aids are only reimbursed in connection with an accident. You should find out whether your home insurance will reimburse you for your glasses.

If you are interning at a Finnish State authority, you are covered by the State’s travel protection scheme.

I am working as a posted employee. Will the travel protection coverage be in effect during my holiday trip?
Your travel protection coverage is valid even on separate trips to foreign countries that are outside the destination country, even if these are not official journeys. Your summer holiday trip to Finland is also covered by the scheme. While you are in Finland we primarily recommend that you visit a public health care facility if you require medical care.

The travel protection covers all persons travelling on an official government assignment even if the persons in question were not in a service relationship with the State.

All reasonable expenses related to pregnancy monitoring and childbirth are covered by the travel protection scheme. I am on a three-week work trip in Mexico. Is my travel protection valid during the weekend outside my working hours?
The coverage is valid for the duration of your work trip, even during any leisure time that occurs during your official journey (including weekends). If your official journey ends on a Friday but you are going to stay in the destination country for the weekend, the coverage is no longer valid, even if your employer pays for your return trip. This means that the coverage is valid only for the duration of your assignment.

How are high security risk areas, where the compensation for permanent disability and death during travel is greater than usual, defined?
High security risk areas are areas that the Ministry for Foreign Affairs has designated as not recommended for travel or stay in its travel notices (you can find travel notices here). The Antarctic and the northern polar ice cap have been designated as high security risk areas as well.

If I rent a car while I am on my official journey abroad, will the travel protection scheme reimburse my costs if I crash my car?
Any personal injuries caused to a person who is covered by the scheme are reimbursed in accordance with the travel protection scheme. The scheme does not reimburse any damage caused by the use of a motor vehicle or motor-driven equipment in traffic, the use of a craft or motor boat or personal watercraft. Take out a separate insurance policy for the duration of your car rental. Damage caused to others with a motor vehicle or to the car are not reimbursed under the travel protection scheme.

You can apply for compensation through our e-services. You can also call our service number +358 295 50 3700 on weekdays between 9.00 am and 3.30 pm. Compensation must be applied for within 6 months after the accident has occurred.

A government agency can ask the State Treasury to extend the travel protection to persons who need insurance coverage to obtain a visa. The details of the persons taking part in the trip must be submitted to the State Treasury in advance. The details of the persons must be entered on the form specified for this purpose. If the destination country has an increased risk of terrorist threats, will the travel protection scheme cover my evacuation?
The State's travel protection scheme only includes evacuations for health-related reasons. If you need to be evacuated due to a terrorist threat or natural phenomenon, your employer is responsible for the expenses that this may cause. The compensation for death is paid to the deceased person’s estate or a specific beneficiary.
The funeral allowance is always paid to the estate of the deceased person. The costs incurred from transporting the deceased person from the place of death to their municipality of residence or domicile will be reimbursed against receipts. -

Always call the travel emergency service before seeking treatment. In most cases, the travel emergency service is able to make payment commitments and transfer payments to hospitals and doctors in Russia. -
What should I do if I’m travelling to Finland and my spouse is not covered by Finnish social security, that is, they cannot receive public healthcare services?
If the accompanying spouse is not covered by Finnish social security, they can use private healthcare services in Finland and apply for compensation afterwards from the State Treasury. The application must state that the applicant is not covered by Finnish social security.

If a government official catches a tropical disease, it can be compensated as an occupational disease in accordance with the Workers’ Compensation Act, for example, if the official was exposed to the disease in connection with work. If the illness cannot be considered an occupational disease, it can be compensated for as a travel illness. If a family member catches a tropical illness during their stay abroad, it is also compensated as a travel illness.

Occupational healthcare services instructed that those living in the USA for more than a year should take a polio vaccine. Is the vaccination also covered for my child here in the USA?
Vaccination administered to prevent an illness will be compensated if the vaccine is part of the national vaccination programme and the vaccination would be available free of charge in Finland (national vaccination programme).
The vaccine will also be included in the cover if the occupational healthcare provider considers that the vaccine in question is necessary on the basis of an individual risk assessment or if the travel health guide (Matkailijan terveysopas, in Finnish) recommends taking the vaccine in your travel destination. -
